Docent Insights: Judd/Puryear

Donald Judd, Untitled, 1967

Listen as docents Kerry Jacobs, Janelle Montgomery, and Bryon Adinoff converse over two works in the permanent collection: Donald Judd’s Untitled, 1967 and Martin Puryear’s Ladder for Booker T. Washington, 1996.

These sculptures are installed in adjacent galleries on the first floor of the Modern, inviting viewers to compare and contrast them in a variety of ways. The docents discuss the visual elements, material components, working processes, artists’ intentions, viewers’ responses, and their own individual efforts to understand these works.
Please add to the conversation by posting your thoughts, responses, or stories from the galleries. We look forward to continuing the discussion.  For an archive of all of our podcasts, visit our podcast page.

  1. I was a lead art handler @ Puryears studio, packing the ladder for transport. I remember hearing him tell the story about how he began making it. It’s a pleasure to see the sculpture set in that space.
